Where Corrosion Comes From
Coastal corrosion has more than one source. Salt spray settles on steel surfaces. Chloride ions break through the oxide film. Tidal cycles cause wet-dry alternation. That speeds up electrochemical corrosion. UV light ages and cracks coatings. Pin holes and lug contact faces trap water and salt. They rust first. Bolted connections lose coating when bumped. That starts a corrosion cell. Anti-corrosion for a coastal bailey bridge is not just a surface job. It targets each weak point.
Coating System
The coating runs in three layers. First, hot-dip galvanizing. Components are dipped in molten zinc at 445–455°C. This forms an 80–120μm zinc-iron alloy layer. In marine environments it provides around 25 years of protection. Second, an epoxy primer. It seals the galvanized layer. Third, a polyurethane topcoat. It resists UV and salt spray. The three layers form a composite system. For the harshest zones, pins and bolts can get a separate Dacromet treatment. Thin coating, strong salt resistance.
Where It Goes
A coastal anti-corrosion bailey bridge serves three main situations. First, island and shoreline projects. Jetty construction trestles, temporary sea-crossing access - constant salt spray and sea wind. Second, coastal projects in Southeast Asia and South America. High heat, high humidity. Traditional steel bridges start rusting in two to three years. Anti-corrosion bailey bridges are a necessity. Third, mining haul roads near the coast. Heavy traffic plus salt exposure. The bridge must carry load and resist corrosion at the same time. For export projects in these regions, we coat to C5-M by default.
