The temporary Bailey bridge (also known as a Baily bridge or Bailey bridge) is a modular, quickly assembled steel truss bridge. Its working principle mainly relies on the assembly of standardized components and the mechanical advantages of triangular truss structures, rather than depending on the thickness of a single material for load-bearing.
Modular Design and Quick Assembly: The Bailey bridge is made of a series of standardized truss units (Bailey panels), cross beams, longitudinal beams, deck panels, and other components constructed from high-strength steel. These components are prefabricated in factories, facilitating transportation and rapid on-site assembly. Erection usually requires no large specialized equipment and can typically be completed within a few hours by a small team, making it ideal for emergency passage or temporary traffic needs.
Triangular Truss Structural Principle: Its core structure is based on the triangular truss principle. The main body of the bridge consists of a series of triangular steel truss units connected by pins. The triangle is the most stable geometric shape in structural engineering and can effectively transfer the load from the bridge deck (such as vehicles) through the compression and tension forces on the top chord, bottom chord, and vertical members, evenly distributing it to the piers or abutments, thereby enabling large-span load-bearing.
Load Transmission and Distribution: Loads are transmitted from the deck panels to the longitudinal beams, then to the cross beams, and ultimately borne by the Bailey panels (truss units). Through the interlocking and connection of components, the structure forms an integrated force system that can disperse pressure and achieve the effect of "structural superposition to enhance load-bearing."
Adaptability and Expandability: By increasing or decreasing the number of Bailey panels in a row (single, double, triple), the number of layers (single or double), and adding reinforcement rods, the bridge's span and load capacity can be flexibly adjusted to accommodate different vehicles (including tanks) and terrain requirements.
