When a cofferdam, dam, weir or river-training job is under way, the work often happens below while traffic still has to cross above. The bailey truss bridge for river diversion construction is the temporary or semi-permanent crossing that lets construction vehicles, plant and the workforce move across the diverted channel while the permanent structure is built underneath.
These bridges sit in flood flows, debris and dewatering surges, so we design in reliable abutments, scour protection and a deck that can be opened quickly if debris has to pass. Working Principle
Like any Bailey truss this one carries load through its chords and diagonals, but the detail that defines this product is how it goes over a live, flowing channel. We normally erect it by cantilever launch. Panels are built out from one bank and pushed across the gap on a launching nose, so no falsework is dropped into the diverted channel that the cofferdam works already occupy. The abutments are built to take scour during high flows, and rip-rap protects the approaches from being washed out. The real-world test is a flood event. If debris threatens to lodge against the structure, we can pull selected deck panels and a panel bay to let the flow through, then reinstate the bridge afterwards. After every high-water event we inspect it before letting traffic back on.
